Gaijin Gunpla

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Donate and Win contest for April. The two winners have been chosen and are being contacted. I hope they enjoy their great prizes.

Normally, I’d be posting some more kits here hoping to reward people who have been kind enough to help with keeping what has become a very large site up and running. However, this time I’ve got some different information to share.

At 10 PM tonight I am boarding an airplane and flying away, to spend several months visiting another country and experiencing the lifestyle. There is a possibility that I do not return.

Nothing is really decided yet. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt anxious but so free at the same time.

The tagline for Gaijin Gunpla reads,

A foreigner in over his head in the world of Gunpla in Japan.

That held true for eight years but now, I’m not sure what that tagline should read. I’m not walking away fro the hobby altogether. I’ve still got a backlog to get through and the RG Complete Project to work on. I’ve got two giant boxes packed with kits ready to send wherever it is I am ending up. (There are some things in there that will blow some Gunplar minds…) However, being away from the home country of Gundam means that I won’t have the access to Gunpla in the way I did before. I still want to keep Gaijin Gunpla alive and kicking but posts may take longer in coming. And while I will leave the Support banner up for anyone who feels they still want to help out, I won’t be in a position to offer prizes for some time at least.

Maybe it is good to step away for a while. Looking at my WordPress Dashboard, I have 699 posts in the WIP section! That is a lot of Gunpla and a lot of time I have spent with these marvelous plastic robots. Maybe it is good to slow down and reassess where life is taking me while focusing more on what is best for my family.

Gaijin Gunpla will go on, just in a different capacity.

Thanks to everyone who has enjoyed the site and the efforts I’ve put into it.

I’ve got to go dry my eyes now.

Does that mean you are leaving Hobbylink Japan also? That’s a shame if true. I knew your blog, and your show at Hbl when I first start out (no time for this with 2 kids, but I’m still following your blog). You were pretty new with the Hobbylink TV at that point also (IIRC, you were only at eps 6 or something).

Anyway, bon voyage, and good luck to you and your family.

Best of luck to you, Syd

I hope this isn’t goodbye, but thanks for all you put into gunplatv and this site. I got back into gunpla after watching and learning from the vids. Havent worked on any since 20ish years ago.

  3. BlackHaro says:

I wish you luck wherever place you’ll go! This site has provided me insight and inspiration in our hobby, abs I’ll still always be eager to check for new stuff! Godspeed!

Been following your blog for around 3-4 years now.
I really really like your WIP posts and gunpla reviews (really help me to choose which gunpla to buy. Still waiting for the zeta accelerate review).
    But yeah, change is inevitable.
All i can say is, good luck to you and your family Syd.

    Good luck Syd!
It’s been a long travel and, now, life is bringing you in a different direction. Which is a good thing, per se: changes are something we all need in life and you are one of those who do not fear to experience new adventures.
Give us some more details if you wish, you’re like fammily in a certain way and… well… I’m curious to know where you’ll end up.

    Bye for now, my friend.

  6. Takoya says:

It is surely sad to hear you (sort of) leaving, but then I understand how exciting it is to experience something new. You’ve been helpful, resourceful and kind towards my hobby. I know how much work it is for you to post, and I appreciate it. Good luck, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy your new life, while I will still click on here once in a while.

One doesn’t quit a hobby, just stepping away and come back to finish your backlog. See ya!

  7. Charlo says:

Best of luck to you and your family Syd!

Hope you keep us posted with your adventures, you know we will miss you if you don’t!

  8. YJ says:

You said that this country you’re visiting would blow our Gunplar minds.

Is it China, or the Philippines?

    • Sherwin Yu says:

If it’s the philippines, it’s not necessarily the end of the gundam life. We have more sellers here than one would think. 🙂

    • timothy ong says:

Hong Kong and Singapore also has a strong gunpla presence since Bandai i think have official offices there

    • David Fanchette says:

No, he said he has some kits that would blow people’s minds. The country line just happens to follow that one.

I’m really sad to see you leaving, but as you said, change is inevitable. I found Gaijin Gunpla a while ago, and it stuck with me. Your wit, your curiosity, and your steady releases have kept me engaged for many months. I’m sad you’re going, but I wish you all the best and safe travels. Keep on modeling!

    Regards,
    -Ral

  12. David Nichols says:

Good luck, I’m glad life’s opportunities are open to you and that you’re taking them where they are! Hope the trip is grand, and that the family is well.

  13. Jelson says:

Oh my god, Syd, where ya flying off to? Did you quit HLJ? Damn, your appearances on the show was something I always looked forward to. I would miss you, reading your posts and updates every day would helped me in keeping up with gunpla news.

Seeing how your website progress so fast from being a simple blogspot back in 2010, to having your own website now, it brings a tear to my eye :'(

Hope you could give us updates on what you’re doing. (well i guess you might wanna have your privacy)

Well, as they all say, good things must come to an end, all the best in your endeavors, Syd! Till we meet again!!

  14. Danforth Vista says:

Well, it’s sad knowing that you’ll leave, but please let us know where you’ll end up.

  15. Tequila says:

I wish you all the best Syd. Like you I moved to another country leaving everything behind.

Back in 2012 (after a 4 year hiatus) I picked up my gunpla hobby again and that’s when I found this blog and gunplatv. Without you I would have never attempted/succeeded installing those pesky leds in my PG Unicorn. So thanks again and hope to see you back building soon!

  16. dannick says:

stay safe out there you beautiful good Canuck. Don’t do drugs and remember you always have the right to say no.

  17. evora460 says:

I was really disappointed to hear the news because your site was the only gunpla blog that I actually enjoyed reading for the builds out of the tens or hundreds out there on the internet. I’m just curious, but are are you taking your family with you or are you going alone?

  18. Steven says:

Wow, this was a bit of a surprise to read. I hope everything is alright and the move is a positive one! Your reviews and commentary were very insightful (same applies to the HLJ vids), thank you for contributing to the fandom. Safe travels Syd!

  19. Changingman72 says:

Best of luck during your new adventures!

I got back into Gunpla about 4 years ago (after a 10 year break), largely due to this site. Your WIPs provided a great service to the Gunpla community. Thanks for all the hard work that you put into them.

I’ll miss the regular posts but will look forward to see what you’re building next.

    Happy travels!

  20. Ver.Fenrir. says:

Damn it.. I may not post here at all Syd, but I frequent this site for reviews and first hand look on Gunplas.

This is actually my first time posting, but it really does break my heart to see one of the Gunpla Pillars (for me, at least) leaving (well, you did say you won’t be leaving but it does feel like you are…)

Watching your announcement video yesterday with my wife really kinda depressed me. How fast does time go… I am 30 years old, turning 31 this year, and Gunpla has been with me since way back in High School geeking over the Wing Series and Gundam G (Only series available here in the Philippines during those times).

Been thinking that just maybe, it is time i also take a small hiatus from the hobby myself. I still have one last project to work on before that though (which i will be sending to you Syd, i’ll make it so that it is inspired by you). From there i will also slow down a bit too..

Please let me know how i can help support this site or you in any way at all. Thanks Syd. We seriously do not need the prizes or whatnot. You have been a big part of the community, and it is just sad seeing you go…

  21. Anton says:

    Best of luck, Syd!
Thank you for gunplaTV and for your answers to MyFiguresСollection`s, and of course many thanks for this site. Your participation in gunplaTV was very positive, inspiring and interesting, I will miss this.
Success on your way and no matter where it leads.
    We’ll all miss you!
    Safe travels Syd!

  22. Carl says:

Really love your blog Syd and I hope you’ll still have time to write. Your blog is my go-to place for Gundam reviews. I’ve considered your opinions on the recent kits I got and future kits I’ll be buying. We’ll definitely miss you!

  23. Bryan says:

Very sad to hear your stepping away for awhile but I wish you the best. I’m brand new (Gundam medic) and your stuff on gunpla tv and here has inspired me to start this awesome hobby, thank you for that. This is my fist post here, but as with a earlier post here I have been a frequent visitor of this wonderful site, new but frequent. Hope you have a blast where ever you go and wish you the best. Let’s us know how things are going from time to time please.

  24. Manpig says:

It’s sad to see you go Syd, you were a very helpful reviewer, and your blog was what originally inspired me to make my own one day. Your text reviews are nice reads, and your work with HLJ did good things to the Gunpla community. You created Gunpla TV which I always looked forward to watching, and your mark on this community will remain strong.

Even with this however, I wish you great journeys and good luck with your travels! You’re free to do whatever you want, and you really don’t need to push yourself to continue doing Gunpla for us all, just do it at your own pace and take care of yourself with future works, enjoy your life as much as you can, i’ll wish happy moments for you to come.

See you next time Syd, it’s been one hell of a ride.

  25. Tristan says:

Sorry to see you going, but I hope your move and future endeavors, whatever those may be, go well. When I got into Gunpla almost four years ago now, your blog helped me choose kits to build, avoid pitfalls, and find inspiration. We’ll miss you, Syd. Good luck.

  26. Stargazer says:

Have been an avid reader of the blog and the hlj vid, and it will not be the same again without Syd but nonetheless I wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavors. On a side note, I have happily received the MG RX78-2 Origin from the HLJ giveaway, big thanks to Syd and HLJ! The Gunpla community awaits your return!

  27. May you future plans be fruitful (whatever they are). For what it’s worth, I will remain an avid reader of yours. Rock on!

  28. Chase says:

I was right Syd. An RG Unicorn is already approaching.

Anywho, thanks for being awesome… Stay safe and good luck on your adventures. I am looking forward to your return

  29. Limerick says:

Hopefully this is not the end of Gaijin-gunpla. I have fond experience here, so thank you Sid for those. Wherever life takes you and family, best of luck and many blessings.

  30. Vae says:

Dang, my one blog to go-to every morning while drinking my coffee ! Best of luck, keep us updated.

  31. JG says:

Best of luck to you, Syd! Since I got into the hobby last September, I’ve build about 65 kits including 7 RG’s and 2 MG’s, and the WIPs and reviews from this blog helped me out A LOT in choosing my next kit or line to build. Wouldn’t say the HG Thunderbolt Zaku I is MY favorite HG, but your high praise for it convinced me it was worth a build, and I was pleasantly surprised by the end result. I may still be a newb to Gunpla, but I agree with everyone that the community will miss you!

  32. FireKuma says:

will miss you man, your post + amusing non serious reviews helps make my day and helped me get through the struggles of high school, will miss you and look forward to future content from you.
