Gaijin Gunpla

2016 has come to a close. I say that officially now that I’ve had all my year end parties, and a few new year parties, and the hangovers are gone (for the most part). Yesterday was my first day back in the office so I’m officially back to work (for the most part) which really drives home that my holidays are gone. I was thinking back on 2016 in the year of Gunpla and overall I would give it a pretty fair grade. We had some really stellar kits which I personally am thankful for considering it seemed like the gap between those kits was greater than ever before.

At the November Gunpla Expo in Akihabara there were signs that 2017 may be an even better year when it comes to our beloved robot plastic models. Many of the kits shown there haven’t been officially announced though we do know what’s coming to start the year. When it comes to the January release kits I am most excited for a non-Ver Ka Master Grade kit. It’s none other than the GM Sniper II

It seems strange that me (and others) could become this excited for a grunt suit in the MG Grade but maybe after the complex and space consuming Master Grade kits released over the last couple of years something a little more subdued is what is called for. I can’t wait to play with it and put it in its sniper poses.

The Origin line of HG kits that I am so fond of continues albeit with a second version of the Guncannon. This one is called the Guncannonn Mobility Test Type / Thermal Test Type.

It seems odd that a colour variant would find its way to being a normal release rather than something done through P-bandai which seems to be the trend but I’m not complaining.

While the Iron Cavalry Guncannon had the parts to make both versions this is the kit those parts were meant for.

And many Gunplars were hyped when they saw that MS08 was getting a new kit in the form of the HGUC RGM-79 [G] GM Ground Type.

I’m glad to see that it appears this kit won’t let fans of that anime down.

Of course, Bandai is still playing hush-hush when it comes to their Iron-blooded Orphans season 2 kits but we know the first HG of 2017 will be the Hekija.

I’m not sold on the IBO designs and this one does not do much for me but there are more interesting designs on the horizon and we know they’ll be coming fast and furious as the anime continues.

All kits I just mentioned will be here this month starting in about a week’s time. I’m excited but I also am worried because I haven’t finished putting together the massive plamo dump that was Bandai’s December. I’ve got the MG RX-0 Unicorn Gundam (Red or Green Frame Twin Frame Edition) Titanium Finish to assemble. Yes, it is another MG Unicorn variation and I think I’ve built a few of those however, the Titanium Finish Unicorn Ver Ka from 2008 was one kit I never got a chance to assemble and, being discontinued, if you manage to find it now in places like Akihabara it’s going for about three times it’s original asking price. This new version which features the design changes found in the MG OVA Unicorn and two different colour frame options is more than a worthy substitute. If you’re lamenting your lost chance at building a Ver. Ka of the Unicorn you can come close if you pick up the MG RX-0 Unicorn Gundam (Ver. Ka) Decals. There are more late 2016 kits in my backlog but I’m not sure when I’ll get a chance to get on them now that 2017 is here. First world Gunpla problems.

And I haven’t even mentioned the February releases! (But those are mostly secret IBO kits so there’s not much to say)

In the next few days the March releases will be announced and I think we’re looking at things like the MG Providence and other big Gunpla Expo reveals. It’s only the first week of January and the pace is already picking up.

What’s everyone most excited for this year?

I’m looking forward to RG 24……..
Seems to be based on the Metal Build

Hmm…It seems like the Amatsu Mina will probably be just a recolor of the Rg Astray Red Frame with some new parts here and there. I hope that they changed the waist joint though…

On this subject, I’ve seen something on a P-Bandai MG Prototype Gouf but I’ve only seeing much on it, what I have seen suggests a January release. Has anyone else seen anything on this?

It also helps that, as far as grunt suits go, the gm sniper 2 is one of the nicest and more unique looking ones; it hits that middle ground between simple function and personal flair

the RG amatsu mina is intriguing; it seems we’re getting the RG variants now, with a strike variant followed by an astray variant, but the mina differs so much from the base frames I imagine it will be an experience all its own.

The GM Sniper does look pretty good but the disappointing thing is that the “gray holes” on the sides if the legs and elbows appear to be just turquoise plastic. At first, in the promo pictures, I thought it was the frame showing through.

    Happy 2017, Syd 🙂

It seems like the first part of this year will be glory for grunt units which is cool too. The GM Sniper is growing on me a bit but it looks like its color scheme might not translate well into plastic (top coat probably helps?).

I am always looking forward to more Astray models and that Crossbone X3 sure looks sweet as well.

I’ve seen teasers of a new form for Barbatos Lupus. Does anyone have an idea for this one? I just got my 1/100 Lupus and I don’t know if I’ll have regrets in getting it.
