Gaijin Gunpla

For a while there, if it seemed I wasn’t updating Gaijin-Gunpla.com much recently it was because I wasn’t updating Gaijin-Gunpla.com recently. There’s no seeming about it. Some of this came from having a new little one in the household who demands constant attention (I have no qualms about lavishing that attention on her) but also, and many people are very much aware of this, accessing this site was very hit and miss for some time. Often when trying to view the site you would get hit with a Resource Limit Exceeded error. I would get the same thing as well. Basically, thanks to all you readers out there, my site was exceeding its bandwidth limit on the shared server I was paying for.

Thanks, everyone, for breaking my site!

Just kidding.

So my webmaster and I finally had enough of that and have moved Gaijin-Gunpla to its own server. Of course, I did have the option of freeing up bandwidth by removing some of the older posts but that is never something I would want to do. I have built a lot of Gunpla over the five-plus years this site has been going and don’t want to remove anything that people still would take interest in and seeing as many of these models, despite being older, are still available I want my posts to stand as a reference for anyone who needs to look into a particular kit. All my old content needs to stay, but I need to find a way to keep it there. Thus I chose to put Gaijin Gunpla on its own server. Everyone should be able to access it at any time.

I hope.

I hope because it’s costing me more money to keep it on its own server. Quite a bit more, actually. Because of this I am experimenting with putting up advertisements on the site for the first time, in order to help cover the price of this move. When I started Gaijin-Gunpla.com I was very much against having the site covered in advertisements and I still feel that way but there’s no getting around having to pay these extra costs. So please support me in this endeavour.

I’m considering asking for donations, as well, in a sort of ‘Hey, can you do me a solid?’ kind of way. A couple bucks from a few kind souls would definitely make things easier for me. These things will be hammered out in due time as my webmaster and I get down to testing performance of my site on the new server and then determine just how much it’s gong to cost me.

With a reliable site I can get back to posting about Gunpla! I have a lot of content that I didn’t publish due to time limitations and mostly server limitations so some older stuff will be popping up along with new kits and anything else I can find time to insert into here.

And now that the site is reliable again a complete redesign, something that Mr. Webmaster and I have been discussing for over a year now, looks to be a reality in the near future. Let’s take Gaijin Gunpla to the next level, I say.

Hold on to your hats, buckle up, store all loose items and get ready!

Hey! Thanks for all you’ve done so far. I know how you feel. Keeping a site running isn’t cheap at all. I’m glad you decided not to throw away the older posts. I wish I could help to give donations, but hey, I myself need donations. 😀 So all I can do is click on the ad EVERYTIME I visit the site. Yeah, I promise you.

So no more “Limit exceeded” or “Database error” ?
    Hell yeah 😀

There is always rooms for improvement, i only see two of major problems recently, lack of updates, and yeah “resource limited error”. one or two advertisements doesn’t hurt, as long as not the pop-ups.
    Keep Improving

    Keep it up!

Your reviews have helped a lot of people to decide what model they are going to build/buy next, I’m one of them and a lot of my friends are, not only that, there are some people who enjoy just reading a good review, even if they don’t have any interest on the model itself.

I wouldn’t mind some ads or one of those “donate” buttons, good reviews take time, time you could have spent doing anything else… but decided to use it on us.

Hey, why not use Digital Ocean. Tonnes of bandwidth (they haven’t start charging for exceeding bandwidths) for very low prices.

We dont know what hosting Sid is using.
You could easly get a 100GB (and unlimited transfers)hosting for 40-90$ a year.

Hello, Syd’s webmaster here. We are in fact using Digital Ocean. I moved Syd’s site over recently. The problem is not bandwidth or space but RAM. Syd’s traffic has continued to grow, on top of that this site is about 5 years old and patched together in a lot of places causing the DB to run out of memory. I would like to move up a tier but we cannot afford it at the moment. A rewrite however will allow me to optimize a lot of slow pages using legacy code.

      • Frankon says:

Yeah lots of DB crashes lately (like at least 2 each day)

Yup. We have been talking about a site redesign for some time and now are pressing forward with it due to the DB crashes and memory problems. There are places where we can make things smoother that is for sure. It also gives us a chance to brainstorm and see what kind of craziness we can come up with. 😉

Im okay with ads as long as its not pop ups or auto-playing videos.

I’d be ok with adverts, especially if they are gunpla or model making adverts. I hate when sites will put adverts on that have nothing to do with their sites.

Best of luck to ya with the new addition as well!

With such solid work you have been dedicated to deliver so far, I’m happy that I can help you some how. Just out of curiosity, you are going to get paid by ads on CPM or CPC formula? I asked because depends on the System, us reader can help you in someway to maximize that ads revenue of yours.

Why don’t you do the sub link thing where people can go buy the model kits you review etc and you get a % of the sale? Good way to raise money I think!
