Gaijin Gunpla

The second mission in the Epyon build was short and sweet but for mission number 3, I knew more time was required. My trusty co-pilot and I prepared for the long haul.

Why would this part of the build be lengthy? The answer is simple; I’m building those awesome wings.

First off, the backpack. Some small frame parts show through the armor.

To that we added two small wings.

In its current state there’s no way it will hold those massive wings but the next step solved that.

The large frame piece is what the wings will attach to.

And here’s the important part.

As you can see, these parts swivel on the backpack allowing the as yet unassembled wings to move.

Now it gets good!

Big sexy wing parts!

And I mean big.

You can start to get an idea how the wing gimmick works.

Then add a sizable dark piece.

Because of the angles on this piece it took a bit of time to line up properly.

More dark pieces.

And then another big sexy piece.

This part is notable because you can see the small frame piece that is put in place and then enclosed by the opposing large piece. Normally, you put the wings together and then place in a small piece from the outside. You have to line it up perfectly to get it in properly.

Next up is the smallest wing. Just two pieces. It lines up like so:

Close that up.

And here’s the gimmick.

You expand the wings by pulling down on the largest piece but be careful how you hold the piece when doing so because if you are gripping the small wing tightly the piece will break inside.

And then you will have to rush upstairs to get the glue and then hold the piece together with both hands while the glue starts to set, all the while trying to ward off your 4 year old daughter who wants to climb into your lap and help you with what you are doing.

The last of the armor goes on.

And then it’s time to attach them to the backpack.

You will note that the groove in the part of the backpack allows the wings to slide up and down.

Look at the freedom of movement.

The wings took some time but I was having such a good time I decided to do another section. Next up, the skirt.

Start by assembling this contraption.

Then add more stuff!

And then the piece onto which you will attach all the armor.

Now I have to.. um.. what?

This way?

Then this way?

Then comes the center block armor which is three overlapping pieces.

At first I couldn’t seem to get them lined up properly but once I attached it to the frame they seemed to slide into their proper places.

Then the front and back skirt sections are assembled.

Then the sides

The side skirt pieces go on before the legs are attached to the skirt which is an oddity when it comes to these models. But, there’s a reason for that which you’ll see later.

And my skirt looks like this. Well, you know. Not my skirt, but the Epyon’s skirt. I’m a guy so I’m not going to be wearing a skirt. When thinking about it, though, if I were to wear a skirt, I would wear one the looks like this. It’s wicked.

I don’t need an excuse to show you these wings again!

Haha, thats not really funny i know but i just started reading it as a normal sentence about what to do if you break the wing pieces and it turned into that.

I seriously don’t remember the epyon being this sexy in GW the last 3 build posts about it have had my dying to go back and watch GW just to pay more attention to this gundam, also after seeing that red come together on the wings (and seeing it flat coated on GG) HLJ can count itself another order of this fine kit all thanks to you 😉
