Gaijin Gunpla

This was my first venture into Zaku territory and I thoroughly  enjoyed myself. This was a solid kit and I would recommend this to anyone.

Overall Look: 8.4/10

The Zaku took time to grow on me but I can now say it is one of my favorite Gundam “shapes”. Not quite as good as the more elegant shapes like the Hi-Nu but with the spikes on the shoulder and an ax in the hand I can see this guy chopping up litte SD Gundam and eating them.

Colors: 7.2/10

You wouldn’t think that white works but it does. A plus side to white is if you decided to paint it could go in any direction without fail (unless you really messed up the painting).

Weapons: 5.9/10

I like the ax. With the Hi-Nu the guns came looking good right out of the box. Here you can only get a good effect if you paint.

Articulation: 7.5/10

A little clunky but with such a solid build I felt at ease trying to change his positioning.

Fun Factor: 8.9/10

Someone posted on Hobbylink.tv of a custom Shin Matsunaga with metal spikes. Metal spikes!! As soon as I saw those I went a purchased the biggest and sharpest ones I could find. A little to small, yes. A little too long, yes. Can the plastic white ones cut your eye out? No! Score one for metal!

Build Design: 9.5/10

I manhandled this kit from day one and it didn’t budge. I  built it pretty quick but didn’t have time to put on the stickers and decals so it waited on my coffee table. I have cats who love to jump around and knock things over and the Matsunaga was no exception. The hands are exceptional and the pieces go together so well.

Extras 8.1/10

I am not sure if this is the appropriate category but I was really impressed that they included metal parts (the springs). Another thing I liked was there was enough dry transfers for me to mess up, and I messed up big time (take a close look at the pictures).

Conclusion:

You can tell by the pictures that I put too much glue on metal and did not take the time to scrape it off. It won’t happen again. I purchased the new RG Zaku and I will tell you now that if I can get metal spikes on that little thing I will.

I love Zaku II, I wish someday I will have Zaku II ( normal color ), A Shin custom, and the most badass of all, Black trinity. I already have Chars Zaku II 2.0, and I have to say, it’s one of the most enjoyable builds I already have, it’s such a great design in a MG. One think I dislike about bandai chooses is the fact that they launch a lot of MG variations and don’t do HGs counterparts. I would love to have a one MG Zaku II, and a lot of HG variations, but no, only MG, and this really let me handcaped, because I don’t have all that money to spend on gundam…, oh well, I’m rambling now. Good review, just need some more action packed poses, maybe on a action base?

    Does the spikes have to be have to be sharp? ^^;

The sharpness is definitely a prerequisite. I could have chosen the small, wider ones that would have fit better but how are they going to injure someone if they’re so short?

I should pose better. The more I build the more I want to. It is just a matter of time before I give it a shot. My next project is trying to paint and build a Five Star Stories kit. Then it is off to do the RG Zaku.

Is it just me or did you not tell us if this was a HG or a MG? anyways, awesome that you bought spikes, it looks cooler! and is it giving us the middle finger in the last photo? Anyway great job.

I love the Zaku II, it’s my second favorite design to come out of MS Gundam (My first is the Gouf)… I have one of the MS-06F’s unpainted out of the box and they nice as is. The original green color is nice but the design lends itself to pretty much any color or even a camoflauge. Looks great with those extra long spikes >:)

It is a MG, I linked it up at the beginning of the post (http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN956655). My new thing is to try to find some metal piece (preferably sharp) that I can attach to my future builds.

i think this comment is like a century late…have you tried panel lining your kits? i think they would look cooler and more badass 😀
