Gaijin Gunpla

The ReZEL is the newest Master Grade kit from Gundam UC and as such I had to pick it up right away.  I wanted to also build it right away but because I’m taking part in the ReZEL Group Build on the Gundam Australia Forum, I put it aside while the other members of the Group Build awaited theirs. And as soon as theirs were said to be on the way, I started on mine.  Oh ya!

Overall Look : 9/10

I love how this suit looks. I don’t think there’s a UC suit that I don’t like and the ReZEL might be the best of them all after the Sinanju. To me, it looks how a transforming, fighting robot should look. It looks like a powerful machine built for a specific purpose. That large backpack only adds to the effect, in my opinion, and the legs are Zeta sexy.

Colors : 9/10

I really like the blue that Bandai produced and it goes excellently with the white. The slightly different shade used for the lower torso really brings it out. It’s a shame I’m going to have to paint it. 😉

Weapons : 6/10

The rifle is nice, but could have been cooler. And for the record, I don’t really think the Commander Type’s weapon is that great either. The shield is well done but seems to lack something in my opinion. The handles for the beam sabers are the perfect size to work with the gimmick in the arm (more on that later).

Articulation : 7/10

As this is a transforming suit you can expect good articulation in the shoulders and the hips and while the arms are fine thanks to 360 degrees rotational movement above the elbow, the legs don’t have a lot of motion in the hips mostly because of how the joint is designed for the transformation. The side armor moves quite easily and doesn’t hinder movement which is great but also seems to pop off too easily.

Build Design : 9/10

Love it! Of course, this kit transforms into flight mode without the swapping of any pieces so the inner frame had to be designed to enable the transformation and the outer armor designed to accomodate it.

The entire time I was building this kit I was enjoying each and every step and excited to see how the section I was building would be used in the transformation.

When you finally complete it and try to transform it the first time you’ll be amazed at how each and every part lines up and works with different parts you assembled. In a word, it’s awesome, if not a little cumbersome to transform. It’s almost too intricate which is why I docked it a point.

Fun Factor : 8/10

A lot of fun to build and almost, but not quite, as much fun to play with, but I will admit to getting really frustrated trying to transform it. At one point I gave up trying to follow the manual and just did it my own way. I even had to take the suit apart into three sections, transform them and then put it back together because it seemed the sections just got in each others’ way. I even vowed to myself never to transform it into flight mode again.

Extras : 5/10
You get a pilot figure plus two other 1/100 scale figures, not that I even use those but it’s nice to get an extra anything. The extra energy packs that fit on the inside of the shield are welcome and the hatch on the arm which opens up to reveal the beam saber handles or guns is designed really well. You actually use the shield as a key of sorts to open it up.

I admit to going into this build a little hesitant because I consider transforming kits to be a bother more often than not and actually prefer parts swapping as you would an HG but the ReZEL is so impressive it may have changed my mind. Can’t recommend this kit enough!

I am a really fan of ReZEL, I am trying to get some money to get the Commander Type HG, since the MG it’s too much for me. I am also trying desperatily to get the Kshatriya, one of my favorite designs ever, I am going to get it for achieving entering the college. All of Unicorn designs are fantastic to me.

Have you watched episode 2 Syd? I think a lot of people would like to see what you think of it ^^

You should’ve dropped by Canada during this past summer! I managed to pick up an HG Commander type ReZEL for 10$CAD at a hobby shop in British Columbia. It was on sale because of a seventy-something-box overstock of ’em.

      Hi Yuri,

I haven’t watched episode 2 yet but really want to!! Hopefully I can catch it in the theater but if not I’ll pick up the release when it hits stores.

Ah dude great review. Great pics also. I’d been holding out hope for an MG ReZEL since I got a gasho gasho toy of it earlier this year. It sat fascinatingly on my desk until my fascination became a desire. It really is great when something you hope get’s MG’d, gets MG’d! I am having so much fun building this kit. I might be getting a little jaded, but the trimming and sanding means some aspects of building for me are starting to become a chore of tedium. Not with the ReZEL however. I’m loving every minute I get to work on it. The assembly design is clever, it looks incredible, and each piece just adds to the marvel of the build. Like you I am enjoying every step. Its almost like I’m building my first Gunpla again.

Nice kit… This ReZel is definartely a nice looking kit. Nice color choose on Bandai’s part. Yet another one to add to the want list. Actually I think that I’d want two of them now after seeing both modes. One for the robot form, one in aircraft mode. I think this model would look awesome painted up in metallic blue.

    Hi Syd,

Nice Review and I have to say i’m a big fan of transformable kits (I have a MG Zeta PLus, laying around, build a V-Dash, had a ZZ heavy Armored, so I’m a sucker for transformers :P). The ReZel looks really nice especially the coloring. I’ll probably get 3 HG’s of them when I drop by HK, so I can build a squad :).
I have a off topic question: How do you keep your finished kits dust free ? Air tight case of just daily cleaning ?

    Hi Sunny,

I built the MG Victory which is a transformable kit and transformed it once for pictures. The design is great but not something I will take advantage of seeing as I paint my kits and then leave them in robot form. How do I keep my kits dust free? Well.. I don’t. I build them, take the gallery pictures, put them on my desk at work, occasionally play with them and more or less let them collect dust. I should really clean these things, and because I top coat almost all my kits wiping them down to remove dust shouldn’t be a problem. As I have too many on my desk now I need to take some home but my house is far dustier than the office so I will have to look into getting a display case.

Awesome kit! I love the zeta style kits. I built a RGZ in test type colors Orange, Grey and a little yellow. After that I fell in love with the zeta type designs. Cant wait to buy this one. Love the shoulder and sensor clear red pieces. I will have to custom paint him though. Sweet kit!

Have you already built the MG Zeta 2.0? I would imagine it to be far more complex than the ReZEL, but way better than it’s original MG counterpart. The ReZEL does look a lot more stable in articulation and transformation. I decided to skip buying this in favor of the Commander Type in January. The colors and overall Katoki-created design are too good to pass up. I’m just glad Katoki himself didn’t engineer this.

I have built the MG Zeta C1 Test (I think that’s what it’s called) kit way back when but didn’t enjoy it as much as I did the ReZEL. The ReZEL just seems more sturdy. But that’s to be expected when you compare the age of the kits.

  8. CKai Cydek says:

Well, that’s great to hear! Thanks, now I feel more confident about my January purchase ^_^

My very first MG was the original Zeta and that was a nightmare.

  9. Sunny says:

@CKai Cydek, he if you thought that was a nightmare to build, try building the FA ZZ Gundam Sentinel color, I think that kit was so ancient I really got frustrated by it. I don’t mean the recent one, but the very old one, I can’t even think about the build anymore, it had metal coil springs as connectors. http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN20267
    This one :0

  10. Sunny says:

well hard to build no so, but yeah metal springs in it it was hard to fit all of that bulky armor and you needed to paint all of it, was very cheap plastic( off colors) I even ended up using glue on some parts. Shivers at the thought of it.

Hi, I recently got this kit after reading your review, and I was wondering: is there any way to get ahold of the translated marking guide? I know you did something similar with the MG Epyon.

  12. Bocalt says:

One small question can the beam saber via rifle configuration from zeta gundam and defensor units be reproduced? it isn’t advertised anywhere unlike the other two…
